This is an original watercolor on Fabriano Artistico Soft Press paper. It measures 14.5" x 21.5".
It represents the head of a huge marble statue by Bartolomeo Ammannati (1563�1565) which was commissioned on the occasion of the wedding of Francesco I de' Medici with Johanna of Austria in 1565. The Neptune figure, whose face resembles that of Cosimo I de' Medici, was meant to be an allusion to the dominion of the Florentines over the sea. It stands in the middle of a beautiful fountain.
I have painted the lower part of this fountain - Neptune's Sea Horses - and fell in love with the details of this white marble face. I decided to add warm colors on the left hand side of the painting and cool colors on the right hand side.
Christiane Kingsley is a Canadian artist working in watercolor, acrylic,oil and mixed media. She started her art journey more than 30 years ago as a fibre artist ; for many years, she sold her work through major craft shows in the Ottawa,Ontario,area . About 15 years ago, she discovered the magic of watercolour and the transition to this artistic expression was most fluid and logical. Christiane retired in December 2010 after a successful career as a high school teacher and then as a director of learning programs and services in the Canadian federal Public Service.
